Annoying Sale Strategies

Annoying Sale Strategies
Prompt: Scummy sales robots.

I hate salesman. I recently had a conversation on LinkedIn that I thought was going well. Talked about mutual partnership and startups and all that. Joined the call... and it was obviously a sales pitch for engineering talent.

  1. I am my own engineering talent. Until I build my own ChatGPT I'm not interested. In fact, I very much don't trust any other engineers to do any of the work.
  2. I wouldn't hire your company if my life depended on it. I recruit engineers from U of M and train them up on #MyWay of building code.

For bullet point 1 all I heard was disbelief and even got pushback... you shouldn't be responsible for all of that. "**** YOU BITCHES" not only should I be responsible for all that, it's the fastest way to get it done. Perhaps I'm unique in saying that I can design, prototype, secure, add accessibility, etc... all by myself. But, I don't believe so. It's a small subset of engineers, but I am not the only one. I may be unique in the scale of a project I undertake in that manner, but there are plenty of "10x" engineers out there that this claim should not be unbelievable.

I am forced to conclude one thing about their engineers: they suck. But that is beside the point. My point is: when did we become comfortable with being so dishonest and wasting each others time. Why is this a thing? Why not be straight forward:

  • Them: Hi Chris, we're a firm that outsources engineering talent are you interest?
  • Me: No, not at all, don't waste your time.

Also, when did we become adverse to trading effort over money. If they came to me and said:

  • Them: You know, you're really good at this AI stuff and we don't have a core competency in that. Can we trade you 10 hours of our time for 40 hours of engineering time per week?
  • Me: Hell yeah. I'd love to help, building inclusive AI apps is my passion and I can do a lot for your company that you can't do for yourself. Let's go. I would value my time at 10:1, but I'll humbly accept 4:1.

When did everything we do become about the exchange of the almighty dollar.

  • 1 Timothy: For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
